[100 DAYS] DAY 6: PETE SOUZA

Dear President Obama,

Thank you for introducing us to Pete Souza.

Of course Mr. Souza has been capturing both important and candid life moments for years. But, to put it plainly, I simply was unaware. While Chicago is my favorite city, I don’t receive the Chicago Tribue. I also was too young to remember Reagan as president, so Mr. Souza’s first presidential appointment as White House photographer was discovered much, much later.

I guess partial gratitude for both of you meeting should go to Jeff Zeleny. For agreeing to let him continue lurking in the corner to capture many great, real moments—I thank you.

I hear Mr. Souza took over 2 million photos of you while you were in office. You’re lucky you didn’t have to pay for all that film development like Reagan did, that would be a pretty Lincoln!

The following are a few of my favorite photos of you at work:

Obama concluded his North Carolina vacation with his first meeting of the ailing evangelist, who has counseled commanders in chief since Dwight Eisenhower.” via Tampa Bay Times

Carlton’s son, Jacob, softly told the President he had just gotten a haircut like President Obama, and asked if he could feel the President’s head to see if it felt the same as his.” via Time

The following I read is one of your favorites, so I figured I would include it here. It’s your tribute after all!

Spider-Man had been trick-or-treating for an early Halloween with his father, White House aide Nate Tamarin in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. I can never commit to calling any picture my favorite, but the President told me that this was HIS favorite picture of the year when he saw it hanging in the West Wing a couple of weeks later." via Tampa Bay Times

Although this is day 6 of my 100 days of thanks, I humbly suggest you want to take a walk down memory lane by looking at your first 100 days in office. It’s incredible what he captured along this journey. I am so glad a book was made available (and I look forward to part two and three!); it’s one of those coffee table books one will actually open and read.

Thanks, Obama.
