I wish that I could say that one of my absolute favorite quotes on leadership came from this amazing book on running your own business or from this major business site that I follow but, in actuality, it came from watching an episode of Grey’s Anatomy.
Yes. That’s right. Grey’s Anatomy. There was a scene where Doctor Webber was talking to one of the doctors about leadership. And he said this: “You want someone to run a four minute mile you don’t chase them. You don’t give them something to run from. You give them something to run to.”
Now, I realize that this is a fictional character speaking about a fictional situation but, oh how it applies to our lives. Often we take the wrong approach in business. Especially as women, we really feel the need to do more and do it harder and stronger and better, sometimes at the expense of others.
As a Yellow Status Presenter with Younique, a direct sales makeup company that has swept the market with our 3D+ Fiber Lash Mascara and naturally based products, I’ve built my business on integrity, value, and empowerment which, I must say, I have yet to find in any other home based company I’ve been a part of.
That said, I would like to share on Four Fundamentals of Small Business that I have found particularly helpful.
Number ONE: Find a product or a company that you can back 100%. You have to love your company and you have to love your product. If either of those notions causes hesitation then you are in the wrong business. Your public and customer base will always recognize if you can’t back your product so you really have to make a choice whether you can be all in because there is no lukewarm in any kind of successful business.
Number TWO: Realize and understand that your friends are NOT your customer base. Yes, it can be a little disheartening because in a perfect world our friends love and support us and assist us when we need it, but we don’t live in a perfect world! And placing that expectation on our friends is just not very fair. Learn to branch out and take chances! Sometimes the best thing we can do for our business is to live it and show it in a way that isn’t salesy or spammy. You can’t always predict the outcome so never be afraid to ask the questions that may help you make a sale!
Number THREE: Do you. Be you. Run your business your way. I cannot tell you how many opinions I’ve had from people who simply do not have the vision I have for my business. Sometimes the help has been wonderful and sometimes the advice has just made me waver and doubt my progress. However, that being said, don’t be afraid to try something new for the sake of your business. I’ve learned that I actually love making little videos about my product and running my sales events differently than other Presenters. Being flexible and applying new tools works for me and I’ve had some really great results from it.
Number FOUR: Leaders must be willing to work. As a leader in your business you want to lead by example. Not only that but you want to lead in a way that instills pride, satisfaction, and passion in your team. There will always be days where sales are down and business is rough, but those are the days where it is the MOST important for you to press in and work hard. You have to be excited for your business and product in order to lead others to have the same zeal and passion. Work hard to inspire your team.
When it all comes down to you, just keep pressing forward. We’ve all heard the quote that Rome was not built in a day. You can beat the odds. You can push forward and learn what success looks like to you and what it means to you. And those who may not stand with you in support are simply missing out on your incredible journey. Make this journey yours and continue to live out and work out your dream. The only regrets you’ll ever have are the chances you never took!
